The Kingsley Barn is a favorite architectural subject at Kingsley for me. It is a simple structure, and I often use it as a subject when I teach linear perspective to plein air students.
I am always attracted by the negative space created by the large door opening, as in this painting. I like the “light at the end of the tunnel” created by the negative space of the door on the other side. This small little patch of light creates contrast and is a focal point in the painting. It also is an excuse to pop key color into the painting. The bright sunlight on the eastern facade also contributes to the contrast.
The barn also catches wonderful morning light and the shadows from palms and other trees create nice patterns on its tabby walls.
