The contrast of warm, morning light against the cool colors in the oyster beds creates a strong sense of light in this painting.
The painting is watercolor on YUPO, which is not paper but plastic. There are several other YUPO paintings in this show. YUPO is not very absorbent so, it can be a challenge to paint on. One of the advantages is the ability to wipe color completely off. I often begin a YUPO painting vertically on my studio wall, allowing the color to flow, drip, and mingle. The color mixtures are very exciting and unpredictable. After that initial wash dries, I can go back in and wipe out my subject - drawing in a sense - and add additional color. The fun part is the complete rework ability. As Forrest Gump reminds us, “You never know whatcha gonna get.”
